Greener Fuel for our cars!

Green Topic For the Week

This week I came across an article that really caught my attention.

As many of you know I have a serious interest in almost all things green… but a special interest in green-er cars. I’m not oblivious to the fact that we all need and use cars but there has to be a better solution. I know that in the Lower Mainland transit isn’t an option as it’s cumbersome and time consuming, and other options (riding a bike, walking, etc) are difficult as things are so far apart.

Since the lease came up this year on my hybrid I decided to purchase it. In doing so, I also made the public statement (and guess I’m making it again) that I won’t purchase another car until I can get a reliable electric car. (I missed the reservation for the Nissan Leaf for this year… as I was driving… what a coincidence!) I know that electric isn’t necessarily the answer to the earths CO2 problems… but it’s a step in the right direction to reduce our dependancy on carbon based fuels.

The article I came across reveals that technology is in the final process of development since 2007 by a company called Fiberright. They are focussing on creating ethanol from our landfills. This is great as landfills are huge producers of Methane emmissions (a serious greenhouse gas) and this solves 3 problems… reducing our landfills, powering our cars, and helping to seriously reduce greenhouse gases. Although it’s not in production yet it’s releaving to know that people are working on a solution… or at least steps in the right direction!

Some food for thought for sure.
