Part 2 of an 8 part series on little things we can do to make a difference
I thought it would be a good idea to go through some of the common mistakes people tend to make in their daily lives when it comes to being eco-friendly. For each of the next 7 editions I’ll give you a simple change that you can make to allow you to take some small steps to making a bigger difference!
This week we are looking at how you use your thermostat in an environmentally friendly way. Many of us just set them and forget them. This is a huge environmental “no-no.” It’s stated on www.energystar.gov that we are spending an additional $180 per year by never adjusting our thermostats. So what can we do to fix this?
Really there are 2 options:
1) The easiest solution is to get a programmable thermostat. They cost very little and can be set to heat up/cool down your place so you don’t have to… also saving you money. If you want to know what the optimal temperature is, check here.
2) If you insist on not having an automated thermostat you can do some simple adjustments manually. In the cold months try to keep your thermostat at 21 degrees Celsius when you are at home, and 17 degrees when you are at work or sleeping. In the summer set your air conditioner no colder than 25 degrees celsius when you are in the house and warmer when you are away or at work.
